Sooner Fans

This is another example of some of the custom work that I do. It is a caricature that I did of the sons of a former secretary (great gal). They are obviously big fans of the Oklahoma University Sooners. In Oklahoma, you're either a Sooner (OU), or a Cowboy (OSU).

Some of you may wonder what a Sooner is. Well... when the government decided to open up some of the indian territory to settlement back in the late 1800's, they conducted various land runs. If anybody wanted to get a piece of land FOR FREE all they had to do was line up at the appointed place on the appointed date and when a cannon was fired, they had to run, ride, crawl, skip, to plant their stake on a piece of property. (See the movie "Far And Away" for visual clarity.)

My great grandfather was in the Oklahoma Cherokee Strip Run - 1893. (Many Oklahomans forget that there was more than one land run.) Anyone that participated in the land run was called a Boomer, i.e. Land Boom. BUT, if you cheated and snuck across the line earlier than you were supposed to, you were called a Sooner, because you went across the line "sooner."

So, the Oklahoma University mascot is basically a cheater.

Now, I have MANY friends and relatives that live in Oklahoma (In fact I was BORN in Oklahoma). Those people are fairly passionate about their college sports. So, I'm a bit concerned about the effect that my earlier statement will have on our relationship. But... if there are any hard feelings, I would say that I think it's better to be be named after a cheater than after a water fowl - like a Duck.

That was really interesting--I never knew that.

Hmm, not a fan of Oregon, are you? :)

Thanks for the history lesson :)

I enjoyed looking at your art. How fun! I was trying to draw dinosaurs with my 5 yr old tonight and, well, his looked better than mine did. And no one else would know they are dinosaurs, LOL.

Hi, and thanks for the story. Had no idea. I wonder how the indians felt about this?! Pretty wild life back then, eh?

Love the caricature. It looks just as great as your other work.

Have a good weekend,

Heidi :)

Being named after a cheater at least gives the team motivation. Cheaters have plans and execute them. Ducks? Not so much.

Awww. I love Oregon. Well, I didn't for about a month back when Isaac was three. My dad is a huge Oregon fan and brought Isaac back an Oregon Duck Caller as a present. It hurts my head just thinking about the noise. I finally got smart and "lost" it.

Great work, as always.

interesting! I never knew that! So squatters and sooners have a lot in common. LOL. I would love a drawing of me trying to balance art, motherhood, a house, homeschooling, a husband --- maybe it more like a clown with too many balls in the air. LOL. Thanks for the nice comment on my blog. :)

OU... Really? Since I despise Nebraska football, I'll forgive you. :) Just don't tell anyone that lives within the NE State lines I said that. I'd be lynched. Thanks for dropping by my blog and leaving a comment. I have been here a couple of times. Curious as to how you found me, but hey, the fact that you found me is all that matters! :)

Wow! Great "doodles"! I love that the Sooners mascot is a cheater!!! My granddad told me all about that because he's NOT an Oklahoma fan at all! And isn't that movie Far Away about that too??

Anyway, my hubby isn't actually a cartoonist....he's more like a cartoon himself (minus the soundtrack of classical music). That's why I call him that! Thanks for visiting my blog!

Hmm, interesting facts! I know that I'm going to be one of the #1 Sooner fans this next Saturday. We need them to take Missouri DOWN! It's OSU's (OHIO State, not Oklahoma State) best chance to get to the National Championship game! :)

I like your artwork! Great job! Might have to commission you for something!

(oh, and Ohio State's mascot is a big buckeye nut!)

Too funny. My husband is from OK, we met there, were married in there, and had our daughter in there. Then we moved to TX and are now in CO. I went to college in MO, and have lived in CA. You and I seem to have lived in many of the same places. Yes, I did know this about Oklahoma. I love your caricatures (sp?).
