The Rougher Side of Chess

This is a recent drawing that I did for my eldest brother, Lynn. He teaches English at the Oklahoma City Centennial High School. They are trying to start a chess club there and the school's mascot is a Bison. This illustration is for a t-shirt.

When he asked me to do it I thought the concept set up an interesting contrast. To me, a couple of big burly bison participating in such a gentile activity like chess would be interesting. What do you think?

Someday someone should invent "Jungle Chess!" - where the players slap each other around a bit while they play. They'd probably even put that on ESPN 2. They put every other kind of crazy sport there.

Lynn will tell you that he and I don't exactly see eye to eye on... well - OK... several issues. But, he's family and I'm proud of his work. There are six of us siblings that our parents helped introduced to the world. I'm the third. He's the smart one and I'm the one with the winning personality.

In Other News: A few of you asked about the code for typing the strike-through text for your blog. Like this: "My balogna has a first name..." One method for doing that goes like this: (Now realize that I have to put spaces between the characters or it would merely do what I am trying to show you.) < s > your text and then... < / s >. I hope that is helpful. It was for me when I saw it.

I like the bison playing chess - it's WAY cooler than, say, dogs playing poker...LOL

I've seen a version of "Jungle Chess" before - at my in-laws on New Year's Day, my 13 year old son (who apparently fancies himself to be a cage fighter) sat down for a "friendly" game of chess with my husband's 25 year old cousin (who wrestled in high school)...so needless to say, there was a lot of jabbing and poking during the game. I don't think they ever actually finished the game. Oh well.

Nice artwork man!

About your brother...you said: "...he and I don't exactly see eye to eye..." "...he's family and I'm proud of his work ..." "...He's the smart one and I'm the one with the winning personality."

Classic!

Very.. interesting. Though very imaginative and I say it should make a good t-shirt. When I was in the French club we didn't have anything so neat as an animal on our shirt, all we got was a dumb fleur-de-lis:))
Anyway, the idea of jungle chess sounds fun, although my husband thinks bringing to life (the Harry Potter movie) Wizards Chess where your pieces actually fight to kill and win the space would be pretty awesome.

Catch ya later:))

Rick, I've been enjoying both your posts and your artwork! Thanks for stopping by my blog. Hope your daughter will enjoy the upcoming Austen fest :).

My husband and son are both chess players and would appreciate your wonderful drawing. I, sadly, can't play the game at all...but one of my favorite novels involves chess: The Eight by Katherine Neville.

Hi Rick, thank you for the kind words on my blog. I am really touched.

Your 'doodles' are fantastic! Wow.
Is it something you want to take up professionally? Make a business out of? Did you join the Everyday Matters group? I only really began drawing seriously after joining that group. Well, and starting my blog.I look forward to seeing more of your work too. Cheers.

I think it would knock over the pieces to play Jungle Chess. I think my 3 teen boys make any game into Jungle______. They have Jungle Uno. Jungle TV. Jungle Nintendo.

Hi Rick, Lynn here. It's funny but we have actually had to break up one fight over a chess game. The kids get very competitive at our school. They often try to do the "in your face" stuff they see on the sports field. We have tried to use our chess club to teach sportsmanship. Thanks again. Everyone loves the design.
