Super Skunk

Just a little nonsense with this time. I'm working on other stuff all the time, but I don't have anything ready to post. So, during a quiet moment I dreamed this concept up.

It's a bird! It's a plane! What's that smell? It's Super Skunk! The bane of villains, and of, well... most everybody else too.

Thank you Super Skunk—for flying away.

Fair is Fair

Maybe I shouldn't be showing you this one yet, but I want to.

The local county fair board is running a contest to get local artist to submit concepts for posters depicting this year's theme. We're not talking big money here. The winner gets free tickets to the fair and also reserved seating for some of the events. I won't make fun of our fair, but I live in a county that is not well populated, so you can imagine what kind of events I might be talking about. But, they try with what they've got.

The theme (as you can see) is "Pioneering Fun for Everyone." So, in my usual cartoon manor, I depicted a group of pioneers happily making their way to the Curry County Fair.

This is not the first time I've drawn something for the fair. I actually won the contest three (or so) years ago. I drew three submissions that year and they said that they wanted to use them all. (One of the other ones can be seen here.) The style for all my submissions is pretty much the same. In fact, they look a lot alike. But hey, cartooning is what I do. Besides, they sent me an e-mail regarding the contest, so maybe that's what they're looking for.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to attend any of the fairs—even the year I won free tickets. Each year it seems that I'm busy while it's going on, but maybe this year will be different. Maybe I'll go. Maybe I'll buy a pig and enter him in the fair as well. Maybe. Maybe not.

I'll keep you posted on the results of the contest. Either way I had a lot of fun drawing it. Don't tell anyone that I've gone ahead and posted my entry here already. They might not like it, and not choose me. And that would be... "unfair."

With Apologies to Aesop

I went to the bank the other day and the teller had an assortment of toy turtles sitting around on the counter. I asked her the same question that probably a thousand other customers asked her... "So, you like turtles?" The apparent answer was "yes." She even had one that when you pushed it's tail down, it lites up. Like a lot of people I know.

(Some how that last line sounded a bit salacious.)

I thought, "I should doodle her a turtle." So that got me started. The story of the Tortoise and the Hare came to mind. One thing lead to another, and this is what I came up with.

With apologies to Aesop, my version of the story is not that the Tortoise wins because the Hare was lazy, but because he, the Tortoise, "upgraded!"

It's been a while since I've done some doodling like this just for fun. Most of my earliest post were examples of some of pieces that I created mostly for that reason. I've tried to sell copies—with not much success.

Even though I have a ton of Christmas gifts to get out (one on my drawing table at the moment) I just had to get this one out of my system.

P.S. For my kind readers that enjoy... um... reading... the rest of the bank teller story is that I went back today and told her that she had inspired me to draw a turtle (a.k.a. tortoise). She said, "Really, I use to do some drawing too." I told her that I would give her a copy of my drawing (which she had not seen yet) if she drew something for me.

"Alright, but I can't promise that it will be any good." I told her that I couldn't promise the same.

Then I went next door to the pharmacy, where I get all my copes made. I showed it off to the ladies there, and then I took the copy back to the bank and gave it, signed, to the teller. She seemed impressed. Then said something about the possibility of hers not looking so good. I said that I didn't care, but she owed me! The whole point is to try and get her back to doodling.

Now that I've got that one out of my system I can get back to the "ho, ho, oh."

Plowing the Herd

This is another carica- ture that I did some time ago. Teri, who works at the pharmacy where I get all my copies made, asked me to create a drawing of her brother for his birthday.

This was a bit difficult drawing because she wanted an illustration which included this particular tractor pushing this particular kind of snow plow, AND she wanted lots of animals in the piece.

So, I had to figure out a way to incorporate all that stuff together. I decided to illustration the man plowing through a herd of various kinds of forest animals. Of course, if an animal were to actually go through a snow plow like that they would come out the other side as mince meat. (I hate mince meat.) But this is cartooning and, thankfully, I'm not confined to reality when it comes to my illustrations.

(That's a good thing because I often have a hard telling dealing with the concept of reality as rule in general.)

Like much of my earlier work, when I look back on it, I feel that I could do a much better job now. Either that means I'm getting better, or I was just really lazy back then.

Teri asked me the other day if I had posted this illustration on my blog. I had to say no. Then she asked if I had posted the one I did of her son. Again, I had to confess that I had not. So, there will be another post with includes the caricature of her son in the near future.

My apologies Teri. I didn't mean to exclude you from this very exclusive blog of mine.

Safari

I drew this a few years ago as a design for a t-shirt for a children's summer camp. Safari was the theme.

I think it turned out pretty good. The kids liked it. What do you think?

I enjoyed telling the children that there was a secret egg-man hidden on the drawing. They had a hard time finding him, but you egg-sperts will have no problems.

I ask Tressa, (from my last post) to send me some photos of Josh's home coming so that I could post them here on my blog. She was kind enough to send me these three photos.
