Mum's 60th

You might re- member Tonya from the cari- cature I posted of her back in April. Tonya, who lives in So. Cal, is an Australian, and she is heading there next month for a visit.

She requested a drawing of her family to give to her mum (Australian for "mom") to celebrate her 60th birthday. The drawing included Tonya's whole herd: husband and kids, her parents, brother, sister with son; plus a whole slew of family dogs. She suggested a picnic scene with some of the guys getting ready to go kayaking. So, that's what I drew.

This was an involved drawing. For some reason, it took me a lot of time to get it done. There are a number of little details in the drawing. A drawing like this provides a number of opportunities to add little things. I wanted to give them something to look at for a while, and have fun making discoveries.

I hope that you will too.

In other news: My two oldest daughters are coming in for a visit beginning this weekend. We've got to drive up to Portland to pick them up - a seven hour drive one way. It's crazy living on the edge of the earth. So, once again, I'll be out of touch beginning tomorrow afternoon for a few days.

Next week the ladies will be working on wedding plans together. I think I've mentioned that the oldest is getting married in Oct. Good Lord! I'm already wedding'ed out! How will I make it for 2 1/2 more months?

Keep those cards and letters coming - or rather those comments coming. They warm my whittle heart.

Thank you so much Rick, mum is going to absolutely love it. My dad is a woodcarver so I have my sister on a mission to beg, plead and cry if necessary to have him make a one of a kind frame for this fantastic piece.

Rick? How many pictures have you now done for us here in blogland? Have we made you wealthy yet?

Also do you characatures of your family or is it a case of the family of a dentist have bad teeth/shoemakers children are barefoot etc etc?

To Timee2: So many questions!

I wasn't sure and I'm still not, but I counted 51 files in my computer of illustrations that I've already finished. I've done more caricatures than that because some that I've posted on this blog were pre-blog illustration. So, official I would say "a lot."

Rich? I only wish. As you know, I don't charge a whole lot for these drawings. I've gone up in my price a bit since I did your's, but I discovered that if I charge too much I don't get any orders, so I've kept the prices reasonable. But I'm not complaining. The bit of extra cash is nice and it helps when the budget is tight.

I posted a little series I called "The Daughter Series" back in March of '07. Two were kind of caricature-like, the other more of a fun doodle. Like many artist, I have a hard time trying to capture the face of the ones closest to me. For whatever reason, i find it near impossible to do a caricature of them - especially my wife, Marylynn. Maybe it's because I find it easier to insult strangers.

Thanks for you interest. Any other questions?

It probably took you a long time because there are a lot of people and so many details! Great job on it though. Hope the wedding planning goes well.

What a stunning pressie for a 60th. It really is good Rick.

Hope you enjoy your time with your daughters. So you are going to be the father of the bride soon ... congrats. Will your daughter be moving far away from you once she is married or will she still be in the neighborhood?

I'm home from vacation, mum has her fabulous doodle and she loves it. Dad carved a frame for it that was just perfect. Thank you so much Rick.

Oh and I just blogged about it too :)
